Casa Soltau is a five minute drive away from Sulmona, Italy which is an ancient city full of history. Sulmona is famous for its confetti, (sugar-coated almonds) and also hosts an amazing medieval jousting tournament in the Piazza Garibaldi at the end of July. The birthplace of the poet Ovid, Sulmona is a wonderful town to explore on foot with its museums, shops, restaurants and bars.
There you will find facilities such as supermarkets, shopping centres, bars, restaurants, museums, a theatre, cinema, sports complexes and railway station, in addition to many fine buildings, churches and parks. From Sulmona regular buses and trains will take you straight into Rome, Pescara and other cities. The beach at Pescara is only a short walk from the train station.
Sulmona has a huge lively market every Wednesday and Saturday where you can buy fresh local produce, clothing, toys etc and nearby Raiano has a large and vibrant market held every Sunday morning.
Sulmona has been the famous home of confetti for three centuries: in 1783 it became the acknowledged capital of confetti thanks to the skill of a single family which manufactures confetti according to a simple recipe that has remained unchanged.
The confetti Mario Pelino factory, located in a 19th century building on via Introdacqua, is characterized by its typical chimney that sends forth sweet scent of glazed sugar. This establishment, which is responsible for the fame of confetti in Italy and the world, still has a patina of the antique.
Sulmona and the surrounding villages have a large calendar of events which include many festivals. Sulmona's Easter celebrations and the annual International Jousting competitions in July and August are of particular note with medieval pageantry parades.
Roccacasale is ideally placed to enjoy the outdoor delights of walking, cycling and horse riding. There are numerous delightful villages to visit, many with their own picturesque castles, such as Pacentro (home of the entertainer Madonna’s ancestors) and Capestrano. Many villages hold their own food festivals and there is a week of jazz in nearby Introdacqua during the summer. Other sight-seeing excursions include the animal sanctuary and wolf museum near Popoli, the beautiful mountain lake and village of Scanno, the underground caves of Stiffe, and the incredible Castrovalva, which perched high on a mountain ridge, inspired the drawings of Escher.
